The Yoga of the Field and the Knower of the Field

Krishna uses the analogy of the sun to explain how the knower illuminates the field. Just as the one sun illuminates this entire world, so the knower of the field illuminates the entire field. Most people think the body is aware. They think: 'My body is conscious.' But they're confusing the field with the knower. The body is not aware—the knower makes it aware. Without the knower, the body is inert. With the knower, the body is alive and conscious. One knower illuminates the entire field. The field has many parts—hands, eyes, mind, senses. But one knower illuminates them all. Just as one sun illuminates the entire world, so one knower illuminates the entire body. When you understand this, you recognize the unity of awareness. You see that one consciousness illuminates all parts of the body. The field is diverse, but the knower is one. The field has many parts, but one knower illuminates them all. Without the knower, the field is inert—it has no awareness, no consciousness. The knower is what makes the field alive. Just as without the sun, the world is dark, so without the knower, the field is unconscious. Understanding this distinction clearly—not just conceptually, but experientially—is what helps you recognize the knower's essential role in illuminating the field.
