Krishna teaches that action should not be abandoned. 'Sahajaṁ karma kaunteya sadoṣam api na tyajet'—one should not abandon (na tyajet) natural action (sahajam karma), O son of Kunti (kaunteya), even if it has defects (sadoṣam api). 'Sarvārambhā hi doṣeṇa dhūmenāgnir ivāvṛtāḥ'—for all undertakings (sarvārambhāḥ) are indeed (hi) covered by defects (doṣeṇa), just as (iva) fire (agniḥ) is covered by smoke (dhūmena āvṛtāḥ). This is the key teaching: you should not abandon your natural duty just because it has defects. All undertakings have defects—nothing is perfect. Just as fire is covered by smoke but still serves its purpose, your natural duty may have defects but still serves its purpose. You should not use defects as an excuse to abandon your duty. This is the path: perform your natural duty, even with defects, rather than abandoning it.
