Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2, Verse 61
तानि सर्वाणि संयम्य युक्त आसीत मत्परः । वशे हि यस्येन्द्रियाणि तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता ॥
tāni sarvāṇi saṁyamya yukta āsīta mat-paraḥ | vaśe hi yasyendriyāṇi tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā ||
Having restrained all the senses, one should remain steadfast, focused on Me. For one whose senses are under control, their wisdom is firmly established.
After warning about turbulent senses (2.60), Krishna gives the solution. 'Saṁyamya'—restrain the senses, but don't stop there. 'Mat-paraḥ'—anchor yourself in the Supreme. This is key: sense control isn't white-knuckling; it's redirecting attention upward. When you're anchored in something higher, senses can't sweep you away. The result? 'Vaśe indriyāṇi'—senses come under control naturally. Wisdom becomes steady not through exhausting suppression, but through higher engagement.
