After describing the lower material nature in verse 7.4, Krishna now reveals His higher spiritual nature. 'Aparā iyam'—this is the lower nature (the eightfold material elements). 'Itas tv anyāṁ prakṛtiṁ viddhi me parām'—besides this, know My higher nature. 'Jīva-bhūtām'—consisting of living entities. This is the spiritual nature—the living souls (jivas) that animate the material world. 'Yayā idaṁ dhāryate jagat'—by which this world is sustained. The material world is sustained by the spiritual—living entities animate matter. This verse establishes the distinction between lower (material) and higher (spiritual) nature, showing that Krishna has both.
How this ancient wisdom applies to your daily life

You see the world—material objects, your body, thoughts, feelings. You also experience consciousness, awareness, life itself. You think: 'What's the difference between the material and the spiritual?' This verse addresses that question. Krishna says: besides the lower material nature (the eight elements), there's a higher spiritual nature—the living entities, consciousness, life itself. The material world is sustained by the spiritual—life animates matter. Understanding this distinction transforms how you see everything.

Do you see the difference between material elements and spiritual consciousness? When you experience your body, thoughts, feelings—do you see only the material, or do you also see the spiritual consciousness that animates them?
